The fastest way to make a builder-grade home feel custom isn’t a remodel. It’s five small upgrades done consistently throughout the house: painted interior doors, lever door hardware, decorative floor vents, box molding and peel-and-stick wallpaper. Most of them can be done in a weekend.

I’ve spent more than 20 years designing new construction homes, so I know exactly where builders save money. It’s in the details you touch and see every day. That’s also where small changes make the biggest difference.
Project Snapshot
A builder-grade home usually feels plain for one reason: every surface is the default. White doors, nickel knobs, brown vents, flat walls. When you upgrade those details the same way in every room, the whole house starts to feel intentional and custom.
I painted all of our white interior doors Accessible Beige by Sherwin-Williams in a satin sheen. This one change added warmth and richness throughout the house and made the rooms flow together better.

I replaced the original round brushed nickel knobs with brushed gold lever handles. Levers feel more modern, and the warmer finish pairs beautifully with painted doors.
The old brown floor vents became decorative metal registers. It’s a small detail, but you notice it right away in rooms where the vents are out in the open.
To add architectural interest, I installed simple box molding along the hallway walls. A wider trim piece creates the horizontal line for the wainscot, and smaller trim pieces form the rectangular panels. It’s a straightforward project that adds instant character.

Wallpaper transforms a room fast. Peel-and-stick lets you bring in pattern, texture and personality without a permanent commitment.
