Project Snapshot
• Five simple DIY upgrades that dramatically improve a builder grade home
• Focus on small changes with high visual impact
• Projects can typically be completed in a single weekend
• Designed to create consistency, warmth, and architectural detail
• Perfect beginner DIYs for homeowners wanting a more designer look

Not every home upgrade needs to be a full remodel. Sometimes the biggest transformations come from small changes that add consistency, warmth, and architectural detail throughout the home.
These five quick DIY upgrades are projects that can usually be completed in a weekend but make a surprisingly big impact.
The first change was painting all of the white interior doors Accessible Beige by Sherwin-Williams in a satin sheen. This simple update immediately added warmth and visual richness throughout the home while creating better flow between rooms.
Next, I swapped the original round brushed nickel door knobs for brushed gold lever handles. Lever handles feel more modern, and the warmer finish adds a designer touch that pairs beautifully with the painted doors.
Another easy upgrade was replacing the old brown floor vents with decorative metal registers. This small detail makes a noticeable difference, especially in rooms where the vents are highly visible.
To add architectural interest, I installed simple box molding along the hallway walls. A wider trim piece created the horizontal break for the wainscot, and smaller trim pieces formed the rectangular panels. It is a straightforward project that adds instant character.
The final update was adding peel-and-stick wallpaper. Wallpaper can transform a room quickly and is a great way to introduce pattern, texture, and personality without committing to permanent installation.
Together, these simple upgrades helped move our home from builder-grade to something that feels much more thoughtful and custom.
