Before

After

I never loved the idea of having a television in our primary bedroom, but there are definitely nights when it’s nice to watch something before going to sleep. The challenge was figuring out how to include a TV without it becoming the focal point of the room.

The solution was to hide it.

I discovered a motorized TV lift and immediately started thinking about how I could build it into a dresser so the TV would completely disappear when not in use.

Originally, I ordered cabinets to build the base, but they arrived made from particle board and weren’t the quality I wanted in our bedroom. After researching reduced-depth cabinets and RTA options, I decided to pivot and use a sturdy dresser from Wayfair instead.

From there, I customized the piece to look like a built-in.

I added side panels, trim, and pole wrap details to elevate the design. The entire piece was primed and painted, and I finished it with new hardware for a cleaner, more designer look. One of my favorite design tricks was splitting the top board so the TV lift could move freely while still allowing framed artwork to hang behind it.

Now the TV stays completely hidden most of the time, and when we want it, it quietly rises up from the dresser. The result is a functional storage piece that looks like custom built in cabinetry while cleverly hiding the TV.

Design Strategy

• Use a motorized TV lift so the television disappears completely when not in use
• Start with a sturdy dresser base and customize it to look like built in cabinetry
• Add side panels, trim, and pole wrap to elevate the furniture piece into architectural millwork
• Use new hardware to upgrade the dresser and tie it into the room’s finishes
• Split the top board so the TV lift can operate while artwork remains mounted behind the dresser
• Keep the design simple so the focus stays on the room rather than the television

DIY Lessons Learned

• Always confirm cabinet materials before ordering. Particle board can be disappointing for furniture builds
• A sturdy dresser can be a great alternative base when cabinets don’t work for a project
• TV lifts require careful planning for clearance above the unit
• Splitting the top panel can allow a lift mechanism to operate while maintaining wall decor
• Trim and pole wrap are simple ways to make furniture look custom and built in
• Always keep track of remotes for lift systems… or expect to reorder them
