Hidden Bathroom Storage Cabinet

Recessed Wall Storage Hidden Behind a Sliding Mirror

Project Snapshot

Project Type: Bathroom Hidden Storage
Location: Primary Bathroom
DIY Level: Intermediate
Key Materials: Pantry Cabinet Organizer, Drawer Glides, Mirror, Plywood Backer, Drywall Tools
Project Goal: Create hidden storage by recessing a cabinet inside the wall and concealing it behind a sliding mirror

Bathrooms never seem to have enough storage, and I wanted to add more without taking up valuable wall space.

The solution was to recess a cabinet directly inside the wall.

I discovered that a pantry cabinet organizer happened to fit almost perfectly between the wall studs, which made it the perfect candidate for hidden storage.

Before cutting the wall open, I made a small slit in the drywall just large enough to slide my phone inside the stud bay. Using the camera, I was able to check for plumbing, wiring, or other obstructions. There was some wiring running along the bottom of the cavity, so I adjusted the cabinet placement slightly higher than originally planned.

Once I confirmed the space was clear, I cut the drywall to match the dimensions of the cabinet and removed the section of wall.

The cabinet was then secured directly to the studs.

To conceal the storage, I mounted a mirror on drawer glides attached to the wall so it could slide open to reveal the recessed cabinet behind it.

I reinforced the back of the mirror with 3/8 inch plywood so the drawer glide screws had something solid to anchor into.

After mounting the glides to both the wall and the mirror, the mirror was slid into place.

A little caulk and paint finished everything off, leaving a clean wall with hidden storage tucked neatly behind the mirror.

Design Strategy

• Add storage inside the wall to maximize space in a small bathroom
• Use a pantry cabinet organizer sized to fit between standard wall studs
• Conceal the storage behind a sliding mirror to keep the wall looking clean and uncluttered
• Mount the mirror on drawer glides so the storage can easily slide open
• Reinforce the mirror with plywood so the glide hardware has a secure mounting surface
• Finish the opening with caulk and paint so the cabinet looks built into the wall

DIY Lessons Learned

• Checking inside the wall before cutting is critical to avoid plumbing or electrical lines
• A phone camera can be an easy way to inspect inside a stud bay before opening the wall
• Many pantry organizers fit surprisingly well between standard 16-inch stud spacing
• Drawer glides can be used creatively for sliding mirrors and hidden panels
• Reinforcing the back of mirrors with plywood creates a much stronger mounting surface
• Small recessed cabinets can dramatically increase storage without adding bulk to a room
