Hallway Wainscoting Makeover

A Simple Trim and Wallpaper Upgrade That

Transformed a Basic Hallway

Project Snapshot

• Hallway makeover completed in one weekend
• Added simple box molding trim to create architectural detail
• Painted trim Pure White (satin) by Sherwin Williams
• Finished with peel and stick wallpaper above the molding
• A dramatic transformation from plain builder grade walls to designer detail

This hallway makeover started as a simple idea while my husband was traveling for a football game. I realized I had about 24 hours to pull off a surprise transformation before he returned home.

The hallway originally had plain walls with very little character, so I decided to add simple box molding wainscoting to give the space some architectural interest.

I installed the trim, countersunk the nails, filled the holes, and carefully caulked every seam where the trim met the wall. Once everything was prepped, I painted the trim Pure White in a satin finish by Sherwin-Williams to create a crisp, clean look.

Above the trim, I added a large-scale wallpaper to bring pattern and personality to the hallway. The combination of molding and wallpaper completely changed the feel of the space.

What had been a basic hallway suddenly felt intentional and polished.

It was a long night and involved a lot of coffee, but I finished everything before my husband got home the next day.

The first thing that tipped him off that something had changed was the smell of fresh paint, followed quickly by the camera I had set up to capture his reaction.

Design Strategy

• Box molding creates architectural detail on otherwise plain walls
• Crisp white trim adds contrast and highlights the molding pattern
• Wallpaper above the wainscoting introduces pattern without overwhelming the space
• The combination of trim and wallpaper makes a hallway feel custom and intentional
• Simple trim profiles keep the design elegant and approachable for DIY

DIY Lessons Learned

• Proper prep work like countersinking nails, filling holes, and caulking seams makes trim look professional
• Painting trim in a satin finish adds durability and a soft sheen
• Hallways are great spaces to experiment with architectural detail and wallpaper
• Simple molding projects can dramatically elevate builder-grade spaces
• Even a quick weekend project can completely transform a room
