Project Snapshot
Project Type: Door Makeover
Location: Hallway Barn Door
DIY Level: Beginner
Key Materials: Rattan Webbing, Trim Molding, Spray Paint
Paint Color: Nebula Azul by Sherwin-Williams
Project Goal: Modernize a farmhouse barn door while keeping the privacy and functionality it provides

This barn door separates a section of our home that we often use for guests. Because the house is smaller, the door helps create a private area where visitors can have their own space while also reducing noise from the rest of the house.
While I love the function of the door, the original black metal farmhouse style didn’t really match the direction I wanted the house to go. I’m gradually moving away from a heavy farmhouse look and trying to soften the space with more designer inspired details.
Instead of replacing the door, I decided to give it a makeover.
I ordered custom spray paint from Sherwin Williams in Nebula Azul and primed and painted the entire door. To add texture and warmth, I glued rattan panels to the door and framed them with trim pieces that I had prepainted. I also updated the barn door hardware and track by priming and painting them in gloss white.
The transformation softened the entire space and made the door feel more like a custom design element rather than a typical farmhouse barn door.
Design Strategy
• Keep the functionality of the barn door while updating the style
• Use Nebula Azul to soften the door and bring color into the hallway
• Add rattan panels to introduce warmth and texture
• Frame the rattan with trim to create a custom paneled look
• Paint the track and hardware gloss white to reduce the heavy industrial feel
• Balance texture and color to make the door feel more designer than farmhouse
DIY Lessons Learned
• Spray painting doors creates a smoother finish than brushing or rolling
• Rattan webbing is an easy way to add texture to flat surfaces
• Prepainting trim pieces makes installation cleaner and faster
• Painting hardware and tracks can dramatically change the look of a door
• Updating existing features is often easier and more affordable than replacing them
